Embroidery vs Printing for Uniform Logos: What to Compare

Choosing a uniform logo method is a specification decision as well as a design decision. The result depends on the actual artwork, garment, decoration method and care process. Compare physical samples and written terms before selecting embroidery or printing for your staff uniforms.

1. Start with the artwork and the garment

Send the supplier a clear logo file and identify the intended garment. Include the proposed logo width, position and colours. If the design contains small lettering, fine lines or gradients, ask what adjustments would be needed for each available method.

A logo that looks clear on a large screen may be difficult to read at chest size. Review it at the actual intended dimensions. Get approval for any simplified artwork before production, and retain the approved version with the order.

2. Ask which printing process is being proposed

Printing is a broad description. Ask the supplier to name the proposed process and confirm compatibility with the selected fabric. Do not assume that advice for one transfer or ink system applies to another.

For heat-transfer decoration in particular, STAHLS’ advises checking fabric compatibility and application instructions. This is general selection guidance, not a claim that WOOL O WOOL uses a particular material or equipment brand. Request the specification for your own order.

3. Assess the finished appearance and feel

Compare samples on the relevant fabric, at the size and location you intend to order. Review lettering, edges, colour and how the decorated area feels during wear. Look at both the front and reverse where applicable.

For an embroidered sample, inspect the detail and fabric around the stitches. For a printed sample, inspect the finish and the decorated area during ordinary movement. Ask the supplier to explain any limitations before approving a bulk run.

4. Agree care instructions for the complete garment

Ask for care guidance covering the garment and its decoration together. Madeira’s embroidered-garment guidance considers both the thread and the garment when specifying suitable care. Do not select a wash temperature on the basis of the logo method alone.

Share your intended laundry process and arrange an approved sample trial where required. Avoid treating embroidery as automatically suitable for every industrial wash, or assuming that all printed logos have the same wash performance. The exact materials and application matter.

5. Compare a like-for-like quotation

Ask each quotation to identify the logo dimensions, positions, quantity and decoration process. Clarify artwork preparation or setup charges, any minimum quantity and whether different garment fabrics need separate samples or pricing.

A small front logo and a large back design are different specifications. Keep front, sleeve and back work on separate lines, then compare the total order cost. Confirm the approved sample, artwork, care requirements and delivery before accepting the quotation.

6. Keep a reusable branding record

Retain the approved artwork, dimensions, placement reference and sample details for later orders. Reconfirm the method and fabric when ordering a new article; a logo approval for a polo does not automatically specify the decoration for a jacket.

Common questions

Is embroidery always better than printing?

There is no universal choice. Compare the actual garment, artwork, appearance, care requirements, quantity and price using relevant samples.

Can we place a logo on both front and back?

Check the selected article and available branding options. Confirm the size, placement and charge for each location in the quotation.

Should a replacement order use the same artwork file?

Retain the approved file and placement record, then confirm that the garment and decoration specification still match the intended order.
